Let’s build a den!
Building a den is an opportunity to spend some quality time with your child and stimulate their child’s imagination. It also helps your child develop key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving.
Top tips for den building
1. Pick a space - This can be indoors or in the back garden but think about how you will create your structure. Will you be hanging or draping materials from a tree or a piece of furniture such as a chair or table?
2. Collect your materials - You don’t need elaborate equipment to make a den. Explore your environment and make the most of what you have around you. You can use furniture, stack cardboard boxes together, drape blankets or pile up cushions.
3. Get building! – Hang or drape materials such as bed sheets on your chosen tree or item of furniture then find a way to secure them in place. This could be with clothes pegs, tape or a good old fashioned knot.
4. Make it yours - Scatter cushions inside the den for extra comfort, bring some food for snack time or favourite toys for company.
5. Choose your own adventure – A den could be a quiet reading space, a monster’s cave or a pirate ship. The possibilities are endless so let your child’s imagination go wild!
