Embracing culture and individuality at 1st Place

In a multicultural society, it is very important to promote the notion of a ‘cultural capital’. and for children to learn about and celebrate other countries, cultures and traditions. It encourages our children to explore the world around them rather than simply see things from their own perspective. Learning a foreign language can provide the perfect backdrop for exploring this and at 1st Place at Cambridge House, we hosted a ‘Language Week’.

During an activity-packed week, we celebrated our different cultures by exploring the various languages that we could all speak including Italian, Urdu, Russian, Punjabi and Arabic. Parents and staff shared cultural tales, poems, traditional music and dance, and nursery rhymes from their countries. It was a wonderful celebration of the diversity and the opportunities it brings.

Creating these high quality interactions enables our children to develop their language and ideas, to think critically, to problem-solve and to reflect, therefore promoting sustained shared thinking. Through our Language Week, we boosted our children’s confidence and supported their emotional wellbeing. More importantly, however, this week gave our children the confidence to express and celebrate their individuality.
